The cooperation between the leading French battery storage system provider Nidec ASI s.a. and Norwegian maritime battery specialist ZEM AS resulted in another win to deliver batteries to an iconic ship.

ZEM announced that their battery solution has been chosen again by Brødrene Aa for the second ship in their unique line of carbon-fiber tourist vessels. The first ship, the “Vision of the Fjords won the “Ship of the year 2016”. This new ship will have a 1.8 MWh battery system - or twice the energy of the first one.

The two companies credited this success to their unique and exclusive partnership to deliver “combined Power and Energy” battery solutions, based on LG cells and modules, to the maritime market in the Nordic countries. To date, ZEM has already won six ships contracts for the jointly developed systems, based on this cooperation. .

“We have been extremely pleased with our cooperation with ZEM,” said Philippe Barallon, managing director of Nidec ASI. “ZEM has combined a deep battery expertise with an in-depth understanding of what the challenging maritime market requires. Expanding our partnership with ZEM will allow us to channel our long battery systems experience from large land based storage systems to the rapidly growing maritime market”.

“Our partnership with Nidec ASI s.a. has been key to our success,” said Jan-Olaf Willums, Chairman of ZEM.

Nidec ASI sa, the French subsidiary of Nidec ASI which is owned by Nidec Corporation, a € 10 billion/100’000 employee Japanese conglomerate, is a leader in delivering storage solutions for the European renewable sector.

“Nidec [France] integrated over 210 MWh’s of batteries into European grid systems of Germany, the UK and France last year alone. This is equivalent to the batteries in tens of Norwegian ferries. So we are delighted to strengthen our partnership with Nidec’s innovative and nimble team in France,” said Salman Farmanfarmaian, co-founder of ZEM.
